The Worst Thing Ever

Well, maybe not, but damn: never get a nose bleed if you have allergies. Or never get allergies if you’re susceptible to nose bleeds. Every time I’ve sneezed today, my nose has started bleeding. It’s terrible. I can live with the sneezing, and the rare nose bleed doesn’t bother me, but I’ve had like four nose bleeds just today, and it gets a little disconcerting when you sneeze and your hand gets covered in blood.

On the bright side, I finally made it out to the mythical computer place today. The boss was out of town, so now I have to go back tomorrow after noon to even see if they’re hiring, let alone hiring me.

Also got a job request from some other guy. Should be interesting: he want’s his site critiqued (fairly easy). He also wants an e-bay-esque search engine so that people can, say, type in their area code and get the closes dealers of his product near them. I’ve no doubt I could do it; I’d need a MySQL database and two PHP front ends (one for the search, one for the guy to add stuff to the DB). The problem I have is two-fold, though: (a) I’ve never attempted anything like this, and my PHP knowledge doesn’t extend into the database connectivity and manipulation area, and (b) even if I can do it, I have no idea what to charge.

Standard site design and implementation typically goes for around $500, but I haven’t seen anything talking about constructing MySQL frontends form the ground up. I’d suspect it’s a bit more than $500, though. I’m just hoping I can pull it off. I can always use the money, and this gives me good incentive to really sit down and learn some of the more advanced features of PHP (and get a better hold on MySQL).

That, of course, brings us to a third problem: time. I didn’t ask the guy what sort of time frame he was looking for, but I suspect it’s “the sooner, the better.” Even working non-stop, I don’t know if I could offer up anything workable in less than, say, a couple weeks. But that just brings us back to the first problem: I’m not really sure, as I’ve never done this stuff before.

Either way, looks like it’s time to scour Google for some PHP/MySQL tutorials.

I Hate Allergies

I seem to have a lot of hate to go around this week. First the college textbooks, and now my freakin’ allergies. I can’t stand it—my eyes burn, my head’s all stopped up. I feel like shit. I haven’t even made it to the computer place yet I’ve felt so crappy. Hopefully I’ll feel better Monday. Either way, though, I need to get out there. There’s only one week left till courses start, and I really need a job.
