WordPress as a Comic Publishing Platform

This post was spurred along by a comment at webcomics.com which has since been deleted, though I’ve been meaning to write something like this for awhile. I’ll be focusing primarily on ComicPress here but we’ll eventually move on to alternatives like WP-Comic, Manga+Press, stripShow, and Webcomic.

WordPress is an incredibly flexible publishing platform and has become a popular choice amongst webcomic publishers. In the webcomic world, of course, WordPress is often equivalent to ComicPress, the self-described industry standard for publishing webcomics. And while ComicPress has done a lot to make webcomic publishing more readily accessible, it’s a great idea that doesn’t go far enough and ultimately hinders the publishers that use it and the platform it utilizes. It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “Maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so until he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face; if he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed, “Oh you’ll never do that!
At least no one ever has done it.”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubt or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done;
There are thousands to prophesy failure.
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your cot and go to it.
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Retr’09

It’s time to say goodbye to another year, and not a moment a too soon. Don’t get me wrong; 2009 was as good a year as any other. I can’t recall it as a great year, however, with over half of it spent wondering if I would lose a parent (a grim consideration for anyone, especially when your parents account for the entirety of your immediate family). Lot’s of good things happened, of course; I found a decent job (not where I wanted, but there’s time for that), I produced a little art, created and/or maintained at least a couple web applications (mostly in the form of plugins for the WordPress publishing platform), read some good books, saw some good movies, played some good games.

I watched a ton of old cartoons and anime. Good stuff. ^_^

Anyway, here’s to 2010: hopefully a better year than the last.
